If you’re like me and were terrified of clowns as a kid, prepare to have a blast from the past as the original killer clown himself is coming to a sewer drain near you.
Check out the first trailer for Stephen King’s IT below:
Based on the chronological first half of Stephen King’s horror novel, IT follows a group of children in Derry, Maine that are haunted by an ancient being that exploits the fears of its prey. That fear is commonly in the form of a clown because, you know, clowns are terrifying.
The film has been in development hell for years, but Mama‘s Andrés Muschietti is directing and Hemlock Grove‘s Bill Skarsgård brings Pennywise The Dancing Clown to life. The cast also showcases a handful of Stranger Things-esque teens including, Midnight Special‘s Jaeden Lieberhe. The trailer seems to point to the film being set in the 70s or 80s as opposed to the 50s in the classic 1990 miniseries.
The TV miniseries scared the pants off children of the era, mostly through the crazed clownish portrayal of Pennywise by Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show). If this new film sees success, you can expect to see a sequel set in the modern era featuring the adult versions of the teenage cast.
IT crawls into theaters September 8, 2017, and for a look into the epitome of campy TV miniseries, check out the original IT trailer below.
