Fans of the modern day treasure, Wreck-It Ralph will soon get to see their favorite characters return to the big screen with Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2. The planned release date is March 9th, 2018 and it looks like Ralph will be expanding his wrecking abilities outside the arcade and into the world wide web with his favorite sidekick and best friend, Vanellope von Schweetz. Director of both films, Rich Moore, stated that Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 will hinge on Vanellope and Ralph’s friendship much like the original film did.
Wreck-It Ralph captured the hearts of Disney fans because of its message of loving yourself no matter what. As Ralph repeats the Bad-Anon credo towards the end: “I’m bad, and that’s good. I will never be good, and that’s not bad. There’s no one I’d rather be than me.” When we meet him, Ralph feels ostracized and rejected by members in his own game, despite the fact that without him, Fix-It Felix cannot fix anything. The tale is modernized by taking place in a video game setting and it appears Disney is looking to expand this technological theme to the entire internet, given the title of the sequel.
Not only will all main characters return, but so will the voice actors. Jane Lynch (voice of Sergeant Calhoun), Jack McBrayer (voice of Fix-It Felix), John C. Reilly (voice of Ralph) and Sarah Silverman (voice of Vanellope von Schweetz), have all agreed to sign on to the next installment of the Wreck-It Ralph adventure.
When we left Wreck-It Ralph, all had been rectified, Vanellope von Schweetz had been restored to her rightful place as Princess and ruler of “Sugar Rush” and the cybug threat from the game “Hero’s Duty” was destroyed thanks to Ralph’s heroism (and a bit of cola and mentos). Disney appeared to tie up all loose ends in the original Wreck-It Ralph and there was no clear indication that a sequel would be in the works, making it hard to predict the storyline Disney will go with.
A sequel makes sense, however. Wreck-It Ralph was received extremely well, earning a certified fresh 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an Academy Award, and Golden Globe nomination and was a winner of five Annie Awards. Wreck-It Ralph combined classic Disney magic with a modern day plot. All signs point to the sequel keeping the same theme for fans to enjoy.
